Paul Novotny - BIOGRAPHY

As a bass player and producer, Paul Novotny releases recordings that have garnered Juno awards and nominations (Joe Sealy’s “Africville Suite” Carol Welsman’s “Lucky to be me” and Sealy/Novotny’s Dual Vision and Blue Jade”) on his co-owned jazz record label, Triplet Recordings (Triplet Recordings.com) As well, Paul has been heard in Toronto Jazz clubs (“The Montreal Bistro” and “Top of the Senator”) with such artists as Cedar Walton, Geoff Keezer, Jo Anne Brakeen, Junior Mance, Darrell Grant, Don Thompson, Brian Browne and Joe Sealy. Novotny also plays regularly with the Dave Mc Murdo Jazz Orchestra performing with Kenny Wheeler & Norma Winston, Phil Nimmons, Don Thompson, Mike Malone, Reggie Schwagger and many others.

Mark Miller of the Toronto Globe and Mail mentioned Geoff Keezer and Paul Novotny’s Montreal Bistro performance in 1991 as a jazz highlight of the year. Mark Miller as well mentioned Novotny’s “methodically melodic solo’s” in his accompaniment of veteran bop pianist Cedar Walton at the Montreal Bistro January 27, 28 and 29 2005. Comments from Irwin Block of the Montreal Gazzette in December of 2003 regarding the Sealy/Novotny recording titled “The Man In The Red Suit”, “Check out this bright and hardy recording”… ” This CD will help chase away those holiday blues”… “Novotny’s pinpoint lyricism makes the melodies evermore expansive”. As a composer and member of The Guild of Canadian Film Composers, Novotny also creates music for television, commercials and film. Conversant in traditional and contemporary musical idioms composing accomplishments to date include CBC, The National News, CBC The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos, Newsworld’s News Now and Space For Living, a stylish design and decorating magazine show sponsored by Ikea on the HG network.

Commercial tracks include work for Suzuki, Humpty Dumpty, Simmons, The Bay, Velamints and The CN Tower. Paul is currently in development on several new projects. Big or small, Paul approaches every task with enthusiasm and conviction. His love of family, skiing and sports cars rounds out his life and brings fresh creative energy and excitement to his music.
